/re/PURPOSE - Plush-pile rugs handcrafted from 100% recycled plastic
Jennifer Manners has launched the /re/PURPOSE Collection of plush pile rugs, handcrafted from 100% recycled plastic. The very first of their kind, a sustainable approach to timeless rugs and recent winner of the Decorex Sustainability Award 2019. Comprised of uniquely plush recycled plastic, these hand-knotted rugs are a luxurious yet eco-conscious solution to the need for hard-wearing and stain-resistant rugs.
Discarded polyethylene components – around 4000 BPA free plastic bottles per rug - that would otherwise find their way into the ocean or landfill – are processed using heat and water (then itself recycled) to create a surprisingly soft and robust yarn. It’s fine, matte appearance is almost indistinguishable from wool. However, the inherent qualities of the recycled plastic fibre offer even greater durability, resisting accidental spills and fading as well as being bleach cleanable. There is no concern about moths and the material holds dye extremely well, resisting UV fading.
The collection is united by its use of elegant lines and an entirely liveable colour palette, with each design equally at home in commercial or residential projects. Each piece is handmade-to-order by artisans in India with the same gentle care and rigorous ethical standards as any other Jennifer Manners rug. There are currently five designs in this new fibre and bespoke options are therefore available on colour and size as well as pattern – all with the same luxurious finish for which Jennifer is known.
