Internationally recognised interior designer and property developer, Shalini Misra has been creating and designing spaces since she founded her London-based interior design company, Shalini Misra Limited, in 1996. She has also developed two award winning penthouses located in Regents Park, an apartment in New York that has won international awards and a luxury build in New Delhi.
Shalini prefers creating spacious interiors, which are comfortable and functional, without being minimalistic in her design. Using interesting colours, organic materials, textures, art and design she composes vibrant and exciting spaces in which to live and work.
Shalini’s success is in part because of her capacity to translate the vision of her clients, meet their needs, while also expressing their individuality. Clients return time and again, seeking her fusion of the classical and contemporary and signature ‘always lived there’ feel.
Shalini’s international clientele has led to a diverse portfolio of projects all over the world. She is currently working on a farmhouse in Delhi designed from the ground up and for which she is collaborating with Charles Jencks on the landscape design. Other forthcoming projects include a luxury home in Mumbai, a 26,000 sq foot villa in Dubai, houses in London and apartments in NYC.
In the summer of 2016, Shalini finalised the development of a set of luxury flats in Mayfair, London. To launch them she created SQUAT, a pop-up design-cum-art-showroom in collaboration with Nilufar Gallery. They sold within a week of being on the market.
While finishing her MSc in architecture at UCL Bartlett in London, Shalini was asked to design the interiors of a four-bedroom flat in Kensington. Having studied architecture at School of Planning and Architecture in Delhi, urban planning at Columbia University in NewYork and researched construction at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, designing a home was a challenge but one that developed into a passion. Misra attributes this project to being the "beginning of everything", as its success led to other commissions and the establishment of her company.
Art plays an important part in Shalini’s interiors, offering a buying service if required. “Art is not just about decoration; it is a focus point which can bring an interior to life, sometimes in a challenging way. Art provides an element of beauty and wonder and
should always be a personal statement.” - Shalini Misra
Whether it is installing newly acquired pieces or working around clients’ existing collections Shalini will always find the most interesting viewpoints, even if that means creating specific niches or dedicating floor space.
Shalini has a passion for travelling and makes a point of visiting galleries and ateliers wherever she goes. The constant discovery of new work, coupled with her encyclopaedic knowledge of design, means she is an impressive resource for sourcing one-of-a-kind pieces, be it from established galleries, little known craftspeople, recent graduates or antique dealers.
Growing up in Dhanbad, East India, Shalini was surround by the work of skilled artisans, from hand embroidered textiles to furniture. It was this exposure to fine work that has informed her attention to detail.
Shalini is a committee member of BIID and the South Asian Acquisition Committee at Tate Modern. She is on the board of KLC and Sushant School of Architecture & Design, where she teaches a lecture series called ‘Beyond the Skin’. Shalini is a regular judge for some of the most prestigious design and interiors awards.
Shalini is often featured in some of the world’s leading interior and design publications, providing expert comment and showcasing some of her most exciting projects. For instance, the November 2017 edition of House and Garden, which focused on art in interiors, featured an 8-page article about a stunning house in Chelsea which was completely transformed by Shalini Misra Ltd. This house won the ‘Project of the Year’ award at the 2018 House & Garden Awards and she was named as one of the magazine’s Top 100 Interior Designers in the UK. Shalini also won ‘Designer of the Year’ and ‘Best City Space’ at the 2018 International Design and Architecture Awards.
